How Verizon Has Found Data Lake Redemption

Last week we had our annual DataWorks Summit in San Jose! The Summit was a rousing success, with over 2,100 attendees from 32 different countries. We had a total of 176 breakout sessions, including customers, thought leaders, and innovators across all industries. One of the breakout sessions was presented by Shivinder Singh from Verizon.

Verizon is an American multinational technology company, providing wireless products and services in mobile and broadband. Verizon is the largest wireless telecommunications provider in the United States.

Breakout Sessions

Shivinder spoke in the Enterprise Adoption track, about the case study of utilizing Hadoop at Verizon. The session covered the use case both from a scale and adoption perspective. Technology adoption typically follows a linear progressive curve with time comprising of feature additions, bug fixes, upgrades, etc.

The case study examined Hadoop adoption that oscillates in a space-time continuum exhibiting characteristics of traditional growth patterns in addition to reverse aging. The session highlighted the technical aspects leading to a well-designed and performance tuned infrastructure for continuous productivity.

When asked about his breakout session and what he was most looking forward to leading up to DataWorks Summit San Jose, here’s what he said:

“Verizon is an early adopter of Hadoop and runs a real data lake with 40+ tenants. Each tenant serves a business purpose and addresses a critical business need, like device diagnostics, finance, supply chain, customer journey, etc. The data lake is a great asset and the value generated out of the data coupled with the implementations of machine learning and Spark is immense.

We hope to engage, empower and learn from other customers embarking on their resource management journeys to get maximum value for our implementation on private or public cloud.”

Be sure to check out this session to learn more about how data is helping transform Verizon. You can view all the abstracts here.
